-The trapeze reference (this conjures up a number of ideas/descriptions and tells us why this woman is unique)
-Mother (brings a specific area of thinking)
-Her "ability to live in extreme environments" (gives us more information about her and the way that she is)
Other words used to describe her are
-Precise and aware
-Adaptability
-Brave, determined
-Does not hold back, confident
-Quick thinking
-A fighter
Three examples of Contrast in this story are:
1. The mother young and the mother old; we are able to see the difference between the powerful woman and the more faded woman, but they are overlapping
2. Mother helping child and child helping mother; the mother used her abilities to save her child from the fire, however now that she is old the child is helping her and reading to her
3. Fear and the feeling of protection; I see this as a contrast in the story at the end when the mother jumps out of the window with her daughter and the daughter feels afraid, but then quickly realizes that she can trust her mother and then feels protected and safe with her. The way this transition is explained in the story is brief but very powerful, and this is where I see a contrast; these two opposite feelings are overlapping.
Q- What does the First Person point of view add to the story?
I think that it adds a deeper connection to the story and it really makes the reader understand the main character better and see them in the same light that the person telling the story does. Specifically in The Leap it creates a powerful impression of the mother and you start to see past the blind old lady image once you are submerged in the rest of the story. The first person POV also makes the story seem "closer" when you read it- it seems to be more relatable (you can understand the character and feel the feelings) and it makes the story seem more real to me.
